The creator economy has changed forever. Today's young creators don't just want to become influencers—they want to become businesses, storytellers and recognised professionals across multiple platforms. But there's a problem. Many spend years building audiences on platforms they don't own, chasing algorithms instead of developing a sustainable personal brand. Others focus so heavily on their personal identity that they fail to understand how media brands, companies and institutions create lasting influence. Drawing from over twenty years in radio, digital media and content creation—as Programme Manager of Tuks FM and founder of Chris Jordan Media—this session explores how the world's most successful media professionals balance personal branding with organisational branding. The presentation unpacks the differences between building a personal brand versus building a media brand, why both are essential in today's creator economy, and how students can position themselves as multi-platform professionals rather than platform-dependent creators. Through real-world examples from broadcasting, YouTube, podcasting, gaming, streaming and social media, attendees will discover practical strategies for growing influence across multiple platforms while developing transferable skills that remain valuable regardless of changing technology. Whether you're an aspiring streamer, podcaster, radio presenter, filmmaker, journalist, esports commentator or digital entrepreneur, this session provides a roadmap for building credibility, authority and career longevity in an industry where the only constant is change. Because the future doesn't belong to influencers. It belongs to creators who understand brands. This doesn't feel like another creator workshop. It bridges gaming, streaming, radio, podcasting, journalism, cosplay, esports, digital entrepreneurship, and content creation under one central idea: how to build a sustainable creative career.
Ready to take your cosplay skills beyond basic foam builds? Beyond Foam: Advanced Cosplay Techniques is a deep dive into the next level of cosplay craftsmanship, exploring the materials, tools, and techniques used to create high-end costumes and props. Attendees will learn not only how these techniques work, but when and why to use them. The panel focuses on practical decision-making for cosplay construction: choosing the right material for durability, realism, comfort, budget, and convention practicality. Real examples, behind-the-scenes insights, common mistakes, and lessons learned from complex builds will help demystify advanced cosplay crafting and make intimidating techniques feel more accessible. Whether you are an intermediate cosplayer looking to level up your skills or an experienced maker interested in expanding your toolkit, this panel offers practical advice, creative inspiration, and a realistic look at what goes into building convention-ready cosplay that truly stands out on the convention floor.

What happens when the worlds of Geeks and Jocks collide? Are they really so different, or simply two sides of the same coin? In this lively session, Dylan van der Schyff and Zeeshan Khalique unravel the story of identity, belonging, and how culture and economics have reshaped both spaces. For decades, one world remained firmly in the spotlight and was celebrated, socially dominant, accepted and backed by massive industries. The other, once sidelined and seen as niche, has risen from isolation to claim its place at the centre of society, driving billion‑dollar markets in comics, movies, gaming, and collectibles. The duo will go head‑to‑head, each taking a side, to explore what divides them, what makes them unique, and how both have evolved into powerful forces of connection. Together, they’ll show how pop culture has blurred the lines between fandom and sport, challenging old stereotypes and redefining what it means to fit in. This isn’t just a debate about who’s better, it’s a celebration of how both sides contribute to belonging. With humor, audience input and real‑world examples, Dylan and Zeeshan invite fans to reflect on their own journeys. Because in the end, it’s not just about geeks or jocks. It’s about finding your people.

What happens when you refuse to specialize? MONKEEMOTO has built a career that spans digital art, avatar design, and brand collaboration — all without settling into a single discipline. As one of only four global Digital Artists in Residence for Adidas and a member of the brand's Digital Avatar Taskforce, he's helped shape the direction of an entire official collection from the inside. His work has traveled from debuting in South Korea at The Gateway 2023 to a solo exhibition at NoX Gallery in Shibuya. In this session, MONKEEMOTO breaks down how staying multidisciplinary became his biggest career asset rather than a liability — and how creatives can build sustainable, boundary-crossing practices instead of picking one lane and sticking to it. Expect real talk on navigating brand partnerships, moving between mediums, and turning a broad creative identity into lasting opportunity.

Comic books have shaped far more than the stories printed on their pages. From blockbuster films and television to animation, gaming, fashion, education, advertising, and visual storytelling, comics have quietly influenced almost every corner of modern popular culture. This engaging panel explores the remarkable legacy of comics through fascinating stories, historical milestones, and surprising real-world examples that many fans have never considered. Rather than simply revisiting comic book history, we'll uncover how comics transformed the entertainment industry, inspired generations of creators, influenced artistic styles, and continue to thrive as one of the world’s most enduring forms of physical media in an increasingly digital age. Audience interaction remains an important part of the session through live questions, comic trivia, and discussion, creating an informative yet entertaining experience suitable for both lifelong collectors and newcomers alike. Attendees will leave with a new appreciation for comics, not simply as entertainment, but as one of the most influential storytelling mediums ever created.

Begin with what is familiar to you. Before you start making a game, you must play games. Lots of games. Hide and Seek, Stalk the Lantern, 30 Seconds, Monopoly, Snakes and Ladders, Mine Craft, Mario Kart, Uno. Since I did not have the skills to develop a computer game with code, I settled on a format I was familiar with: a deck of cards. Every card became a character, each suite became a faction, and they were all fighting with each other. The 2 was the Traitor and he would harm you if you were caught with him. The 7 was the Shaman and he would help you in your time of need. The 8 was a trickster and she would force you to match her number. As I worked on the game, I realised that there was a story I wanted to capture. How do make people feel that they are a part of my story through the way the game plays? Even though the game I had was fun to play, it did not immerse players in my world. I thought long and hard about the rules and rebuilt the game from scratch, with the story at its centre. That was when the game changed from having 54 cards to having 128. This came with a lot of complications.

The Making of an African Anime is a deep dive into the journey of building original African intellectual property in a space traditionally dominated by Western comics and Japanese anime. Led by Lesego Mailula, co-creator of Majesty, the session explores how African mythology, spirituality, monarchy, and modern culture can be fused with anime-inspired storytelling to create globally appealing worlds rooted in African identity. The panel will discuss the real process behind creating Majesty — from two creators with completely different influences (DC Comics and anime) learning to merge their styles, to building the world of Afrentia, developing characters like Naledi and Don, and turning a comic book into a long-term vision for animation and gaming. Fans will gain insight into world-building, character creation, independent publishing, marketing on a budget, and how to build an audience in South Africa before going global. The session will also explore the future of African animation and why African creators should take ownership of their stories. To keep the session interactive and fun, the audience will participate in live Q&A discussions, behind-the-scenes breakdowns, character design showcases, and giveaways including Majesty posters, comics, and exclusive merchandise.
Interested in cosplay but unsure where to begin? Getting Started in Cosplay is a beginner-friendly introduction to the tools, materials, and foundational techniques used to start creating costumes and props. The panel will cover commonly used cosplay materials such as EVA foam, fabrics, thermoplastics, cardboard, and basic crafting supplies, as well as the tools most beginners should consider owning, from heat guns and craft knives to adhesives, paints, and sewing basics. In addition to technical advice, the talk focuses on beginner-friendly problem solving, budgeting, safety, and learning through experimentation rather than perfection. How do you take something people assume is niche, difficult or “not for them” - and turn it into an experience they genuinely want to gather around? In this session, Dr Luca Pontiggia and composer Yasheen Modi, co-founders of Universe on Stage, unpack the creative anatomy of wonder: how scale, mystery, beauty, emotion, clarity and truth can transform complex ideas into shared cultural experiences. Drawing from their work turning black holes, quantum mechanics and cosmology into sold-out live shows, Luca and Yasheen explore how to create a story that makes difficult ideas feel human and emotionally alive. It is an exploration at how to make complexity inviting without being watered down - how audiences can be guided into unfamiliar worlds, made to feel intelligent rather than excluded, and brought to the edge of the unknown with curiosity instead of intimidation. At its heart, this talk reveals a deeper truth: Awe is the result when we not only see complexity but also feel it.
The launch of Blood of Kings, a book ten years in the making, that can best be described as Africa's Game of Thrones. The talk is designed to educate without boring the audience, through the use of humour, quizzes and spot prizes.
Thavma Mega is a Greek phrase meaning 'great wonder/marvel'. It describes a sense of awe and astonishment before the overwhelming scale and beauty of life. This is an uplifting and impassioned speech that dares the listener to reach within the recesses of their minds and attend to their truest calling. In it I discuss how reading transformed my life, how I allowed myself to get steered away from my calling to be an Author of fiction by society and self-imposed limitations. I delve into how I was able to return to my passion in unorthodox fashion with the new skills I acquired along the way as well as the inspirations that equipped me to give form to my dreams. It takes a lot to bring your dream to life but if you listen closely and pay attention to yourself then opportunities will present themselves like unlocked doors. The fulfilment that you assimilate from life depends entirely on your attitude. Much has been done to arrive at this peculiar position I find myself in, yet my journey has only just begun. I will be bringing attention to both Rowan and Dirk, my artists who have given their precious time and effort in support of this dream. WELKINSTONE will be hosting a raffle with an original set of one-off SPHERA concept artwork as the prize.

Shodo is the art of writing with brush and black ink. This art form has long been revered in Japan and is viewed as a form of moving meditation involving the whole body. This Japanese calligraphy may be a single character, a phrase or a poem and the style reflects the feeling behind its meaning.

With all the new things I added there were an equal number of problems to solve. This card is too strong, let me tone it down a little. Oh no! Now this other card is too weak. Wait... suddenly we're all losing health too fast and the game is ending too quickly! Argh, it feels like I am getting nowhere. Creativity is filled with challenges which can be hard to deal with, but if we interpret these struggles as an opportunity to grow instead of a reason to give up, that is when the magic happens. An important part of bringing out the magic of our inventions is listening to the feedback of those we play our game with or show our product to. It hurts to hear that the thing we spent so much time and passion on building is not fun for some people to play. If we tame our emotions, open our ears and listen to what people have to say then we can build something much greater than we could ever do alone. That is the only reason SPHERA has grown to this point.

Expect epic stories, behind-the-scenes secrets, and plenty of that trademark Judge charm and humour. Whether you're a Stargate superfan, a God of War diehard, or just love a good conversation with a genuine legend, this is THE session of the weekend. Indeed.

Working as an independent filmmaker outside the machinery of traditional funding bodies is an exercise in pure creative resilience. In this "guerilla" space, low budgets are not a limitation, but a catalyst for innovation. The primary pro of this path is absolute creative sovereignty; there is no "committee" to dilute your vision or stall your production in development hell. You have the freedom to take risks that mainstream studios won't. However, the con is the relentless weight of financial risk and the "wearer of all hats" burnout that comes from managing everything from logistics to post-production yourself. The modern indie strategy centers on IP development. By treating short films or micro-budget features as Proof of Concepts (POCs), you create a tangible shop window for your storytelling capabilities. Building a diverse catalogue doesn't just showcase technical skill—it establishes a brand and proves you can deliver high production value regardless of the price tag. This portfolio becomes your most persuasive calling card, transforming you from an aspiring creator into a proven filmmaker with a library of assets ready for acquisition or expansion. It is about building a legacy, one frame at a time.
: I would like to talk about the difficulties and struggles, I myself have faced as a content creator in Africa, and about how even without internet and a really bad phone as my only means to make content, I was able to accumulate a staggering community of 60 thousand subscribers as a content creator and can sustain myself off of the income from Youtube. I will ask interactive questions to the audience about what they think most creators especially in Africa tend to fail and discuss the difference of those who make it and those who don't I am very passionate about this topic and believe i have something valuable to share and i will make sure to add some prices for a lucky few who have answered correctly prices will be things that help out content creator. - Speaker Bio: My name is Mbayi Lukisa. I run a animation youtube channel called lukisaart, a channel with 60+ thousand subscribers and a total view count of 2 Million + views. I have been doing youtube for half a decade, and without even internet or a good phone I was able to make Youtube into a living at the age of 22.
26 letters. 26 monsters. Way more lore debates than anyone expected. Abecedarium: Tales of Terror is a traditionally published horror anthology from The KREST House, built from 26 original short stories, one for every letter of the alphabet, written by two authors and brought to life by one illustrator-designer. The stories span mythology, folklore, and original horror fiction drawn from legends across the world, all rooted in the fears and feelings we already carry through everyday life. No two tales are alike because no two letters are anything alike. In this panel, Caitlin, Chanel, and Isabelle pull back the curtain on the craft and research behind the book. We’ll get into the writing, the deep dives into mythology and folklore, the hours-long lore debates, and the very serious question of which monster deserved which letter, before turning our lens to the design process of bringing the stories to life. We’ll also talk editorial and publishing, since between the three of us we managed the full production workflow from manuscript to finished book. This panel is for horror fans. It’s for writers, for lore nerds, and for anyone who ever wanted a more memorable way to get through the alphabet than that new alphabet song nobody asked for. It’s for people who appreciate storytelling as an art.
Superhero showdown is a show where we take a bunch of Super heroes created locally in south Africa and in Africa and we take their strengths and weaknesses and put them in pop culture scenarios to see how well they would perform then declare a winner
Comic books. Graphic novels. Manga. Comic shops. Comic conventions. Now imagine a world without any of them. This interactive panel explores one simple question: What would we lose if comics had never existed? Rather than focusing on characters or continuity, this discussion explores the personal impact comics have had on our lives. Together with the audience, we'll reflect on friendships we've built, creativity we've discovered, careers we've pursued, and communities we've found because of comics. This is designed as a conversation rather than a presentation. Audience members will be encouraged to share their own stories and perspectives through live discussion, interactive questions, and comic-themed giveaways, creating a panel that is different every time it is presented. Whether comics helped shape your childhood, inspired your career, introduced you to lifelong friends, or simply gave you somewhere to belong, this panel celebrates the people behind the stories and the impact comics continue to have on our lives.

Long before I became a professional escape artist, I was fascinated by characters in popular culture who could overcome seemingly impossible situations through courage, ingenuity and creative thinking. My love of comic books introduced me to Batman and, in particular, Mister Miracle—the legendary escape artist of the DC Universe. Television shows such as MacGyver and The A-Team, along with films such as Young Houdini, further fuelled my fascination with clever escapes and extraordinary feats of ingenuity. But where does fiction end and reality begin? In this entertaining and highly interactive session, internationally acclaimed escape artist Li Lau explores the fascinating world of escapology and the powerful influence popular culture has had on our perception of the escape artist. From the legendary Harry Houdini to the fictional heroes who inspired generations, we'll explore how comics, television and film have shaped our fascination with impossible escapes—and how those fictional stories can inspire real people to pursue extraordinary things. Through personal stories, live demonstrations and audience participation, Li will share the history and evolution of escapology, while revealing how the characters and stories he encountered growing up ultimately inspired him to make escape artistry his profession. This is not a lecture about magic secrets. It is a celebration of imagination, creativity, resilience and problem-solving, demonstrating that the greatest escape artists—whether fictional or real—share one essential quality: they refuse to believe that an impossible situation has no solution. For fans of comics, movies, television, magic, superheroes and the impossible, this is a journey from the world of popular culture into the real-world art of escapology.

One of the big hurdles I ran into was with the artwork of my cards. I was not good at art, and I did not know anyone who could help me and so I abandoned SPHERA for two years. One day I discovered an AI program, Midjourney, that creates images from words. I knew that I was good with words, so I spent a lot of time typing to the AI. After thousands of prompts and many months spending hours every day working with the software, my game finally had a face that I felt confident showing the world. But not everyone was happy that I was using AI in my game. The AI revolution, just like with any significant technological breakthroughs, is disrupting the market and taking away jobs from people in many industries. Why would I need to work with an artist or bother with writing a story when AI can do it all for me? When we realize that the best things in life come from community, from real human connection, then we also learn that there are some things that AI, and technology in general cannot do. If we want to cultivate a healthy and vibrant community and bask in the best of what life has to offer then we must contribute to the success of everyone around us. I used AI because I did not have the money or skills to draw but now that the ball is rolling I have the joy and proviledge of working with real, talented artists. It is just more fun this way. Technology can be great: your phones, consoles, your computers, TVs and tablets are awesome, but the people who are there hanging out with you are even more awesome. AI is a tool to assist us in getting started along our journeys, but remember: the best and most fulfilling creations emerge when creative minds come together.
