At just 14 years old, Jordyn Barrett has already taken his love of Pokémon from a childhood fascination to the world stage.

Born in Pretoria and now living in Edenvale, Johannesburg, Jordyn’s Pokémon journey started when he was very young. Long before he was competing, he simply loved Pokémon — the characters, the games and the whole Pokémon universe. His first real adventures began on his mom’s phone, where he spent hours playing Pokémon GO and discovering just how much fun Pokémon could be.

Three years ago, that love took a new turn when Jordyn started playing the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) with his stepdad and stepsister. What began as a fun family hobby quickly became something much bigger. The family started attending local tournaments, Cups and Special Pokémon Events (SPEs), where Jordyn discovered the excitement of competitive play.

Jordyn quickly found his stride. He learned that Pokémon TCG isn’t just about knowing your cards — it’s about strategy, decision-making, adapting under pressure and staying focused when every move counts. Tournament after tournament, he continued to improve, competing against some of the strongest players in the region.

His hard work eventually saw him climb to Top 5 Senior players in the Middle East & Africa division, earning his invitation to the Pokémon World Championships.

Getting to Worlds was an adventure of its own. The family rallied together to raise the funds needed to get Jordyn to San Francisco, where he had the opportunity to compete alongside the very best Pokémon TCG players from around the world.

For Jordyn, competing at Worlds was more than just another tournament. It was the culmination of three years of learning, competing and chasing a dream — and an experience he will never forget. From the intensity of the battles to meeting other players from around the world, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that showed him just how far his passion for Pokémon could take him.

And this is hopefully only the beginning.

Jordyn is already dreaming about doing it all again, with his sights set on Singapore next year and another chance to battle, learn, make new friends and compete on the biggest Pokémon stage in the world.

From a little boy who simply loved Pokémon characters, to a 14-year-old representing South Africa on the world stage, Jordyn’s story is a reminder that sometimes a childhood passion can take you much further than you ever imagined.
