Shodo Artist
After graduating from Tokyo Gakugei University, Kamari Maeda became an independent calligrapher.
In 2014, he established a general incorporated association, Tsugumi, and operates a nationwide calligraphy school. He is highly regarded as a “calligrapher who conveys one’s feelings”.
He has held solo exhibitions and live performances in Japan and abroad, and has made numerous media appearances as well as giving 200 lectures a year as a presentation creator.
He has published many books, including “Calligraphy as a Cultivated Art” (Jiyuukokumin-sha) (15 books sold 470,000 copies in 2024), and is active as a manager, author and multiple other activities.
Shodo is the art of writing with brush and black ink. This art form has long been revered in Japan and is viewed as a form of moving meditation involving the whole body. Breathing, posture, mental composure and the act of touching the brush to the paper all come into play as the artist writes. This Japanese calligraphy may be a single character, a phrase or a poem and the style reflects the feeling behind its meaning.
