Creating Comics Workshop

Welcome to the first-ever Creating Comics Workshop at Comic Con Africa 2026! Our
goal is to give you a crash course on everything you need to know you make your first
ever comic. Starting with how to write comics and then moving to paneling and drawing,
your instructors will guide you step-by-step over the two hours so that you can leave
with your very own piece of comic history. Most excitingly, all comics made during the
workshop will be collected into a special, limited edition Comic Con Africa Zine (a mini-
comic) and printed by the amazing team from PublicPress.cc. Each participant will
receive a free copy, and we will also be running a competition to award the comic that
impressed us the most with a Comic Making Starter Kit and sponsored print run for your
own comic!
Your hosts are Moray Rhoda and Dr Ray Whitcher, two long-time figures of the SA comic
scene. Moray was one of the founders of the Igubu Comics collective and the Mshana
and Beat Comics magazines, pioneered The Velocity Anthology as well as S.E.C.T.O.R.
and now runs the Creating Comics Workshop in Cape Town. Ray, a senior lecturer of
Game Design and Comic Making at Sweden’s Uppsala University, is a born and bred
Jo’burger and has drawn comics for Star Wars: Clone Wars Confidential, That
Bulletproof Kid, and Supa Strikas, as well as his own titles Wanton, Don’t Go Alone! and
SPOEK. You will very likely see him on the main stage as one of CCA’s emcees as well!
Together, the pair brings a combined 40 years of comic experience and want to share
this with anyone that’s ever wanted to learn the art behind the medium we all love! Our
stand will have copies of various South African comics for sale, as well as the incredible
Risograph printer that we will be working with in collaboration with Public Press.
