COMIC CON CAPE TOWN IS COMING

Comic Con Cape Town is making a triumphant return, and this time, we’re bringing a twist!
From Saturday through Wednesday (including the public holiday), immerse yourself in the traditional Comic Con experience you know and love, running from 9AM to 6PM on Saturday, Sunday, and Wednesday. Meet celebrities, collect autographs, snap photos, shop to your heart’s content, and revel in everything that defines the Comic Con experience.

But wait, there’s more! On Monday and Tuesday, prepare to extend the
excitement into the night from 11AM to 8PM. We’ll be offering activities never before seen at Comic Con Cape Town, transforming your evenings from lunchtime onward. Stay tuned for further details closer to the event by following us on all our social media channels.

The cosplay community has always been an integral part of Comic Con events worldwide with Comic Cons being a place for self-expression, free of judgement. Comic Con is always fun for all and lights up any city with colourful heroes from corner to corner.

ARTIST ALLEY

As the heartbeat of any Comic Con, this is a place on the show floor that is devoted to celebrating local and international artists of comic book, original pieces, fan fiction, and more. Fans have an opportunity to admire artwork, get inspired, exchange over techniques, and even purchase and commission artwork from vendors.

STREETCON

The perfect mash up of pop culture and street culture. StreetCon hosts shopping the latest pop culture inspired gear and spotlight street artists. Leading out to an outdoor stage and graffiti zone, where SA’s greatest come together to paint the CON in their vision.

TABLETOP GAMING

Step away from the screen as you immerse yourself in the realm of imagination and creativity. Fans eagerly flocked in to immerse themselves in a geek fuelled universe at Comic Con Cape Town 2023 to see, American actors Ross Marquand (the Walking Dead), Kat Graham (Vampire Diaries), Tati Gabrielle (You), and Jason R. Moore (Marvel’s The Punisher) on to the Main Stage to chat with their roaring Capetonian fanbase. Vikings: Valhalla star, David Oakes also attended for Saturday and Sunday.

The Guest Spotlight Sessions at the con offered the exciting opportunity for guests to interact with their favourite actors, streamers, illustrators and cosplayers through a question-and-answer format.

International comic book artists

Regional champioNships of cosplay

Competing to represent Cape Town at Comic Con Africa in Johannesburg, the Comic Con Cape Town Regional Championships of Cosplay houses four categories – The Regional Champion (overall winner), Masters Champion, Champion of Needlework, and Champion of Armour.

In a costume impersonating Nadja from What We Do in the Shadows, Nicola Andalis went on to become the winner of the coveted title with the opportunity to compete in continental championships held at Comic Con Africa in Johannesburg later this year. 

Casual cosplay competition

The Daily Cosplay Competition saw an array of amateur and professional cosplayers go head-to-head to showcase their skills and win prizes across all four days.

Guests, professional cosplayers, and enthusiasts showed up and showed off with their costumes, dressing up as their favourite fictional, Marvel, DC Comics, Anime, TV, video game or movie characters.

Telkom vs gaming

Telkom VS Gaming hosted a 32-player FIFA tournament in a single elimination format. Along with several opportunities to win big, the top three winners of the day were put into a random draw in hopes of winning the Grand Prize.

Each day, players went head-to-head to win daily prizes, including cash vouchers. Zaheer Hoosain, Reatile Thakholi and John Walenga were victorious on the days they took part.

As the excitement grew around their stand at the show, Toyota encouraged fans to join in on the free-to-play WRC and FIFA tournaments where attendees would be able to test their skills on the sim rig and stand a chance to win big prizes.

With a need for speed, guests were treated to a challenge where they took to the racing simulator to beat each other’s fastest time in completing the game.

Brimming with bright lights, pumping music and eager gamers, the Doritos Crunch Cup brought the heat with their daily competitions inviting players to compete. With several opportunities to win big, guests witnessed two players go head-to-head in a nail-hitting game in hopes of winning the daily prize of R7000 and an Xbox.

cosplay competition

Tasked with cosplaying as a character from an Ubisoft title, Fred Wolf Cosplay won with his iteration of The Prince from Prince of Persia cosplay because “he was the contestant to make proper use of the stage to sell his costume, adding drama and theatrics to his performance” according to the judge Ludas Cosplay

cape town international animation festival

The Cape Town International Animation festival hosted a number of workshops and screenings. Part of the offering included a Physical Theatre Masterclass, delegates learnt from multi-award-winning actor, writer, comedian and director Rob van Vuuren, who boasts a 25-year-long career founded in training as a physical performer.

custom wars

Brought to you by Palladium, Comic Con Cape Town’s first ever Custom Wars was taken home by Liezel Bason. Walking away with R5000 in cash, Bason achieved an almost perfect score of 45/50, outperforming some industry heavyweights.

In the Custom Wars challenge, six street artists were challenged with customising a pair of Palladium shoes with the brief only given to them in the morning – they had limited time to compete with the final judging hosted on the Main Stage on the last day of the festival.
